Leading UK modular construction company Caledonian Building Systems has opened a new 150,000 square foot factory at Driffield in East Yorkshire. The new facility, based in three factory units, will provide a new home for Modular UK, acquired by the Caledonian Group earlier in the year, as well as providing an additional 25 per cent manufacturing capacity for Caledonian.
The expansion of Caledonian’s production facilities follows the company’s acquisition of Modular UK in March and will provide a stable platform for further business growth. The increase in capacity provided by the new factory at Driffield will enable Caledonian and Modular UK to respond to current and anticipated growth in demand. Off site construction is a sector with great potential as developers, architects and contractors look to benefit from the cost and time savings the methods offer.
Dave Turnbull, Chief Executive of Caledonian Building Systems comments: “Our turnover has more than doubled in four years and this addition to our production facilities will open the door for further business growth. By opening the factory at Driffield, we are reinforcing our position as the leading provider of offsite construction solutions to clients in the education, residential, custodial, health, defence and hotel markets.”
Originally the factories were aircraft hangars on the Driffield Airbase which closed in 1996. Each hangar has been refurbished and converted into manufacturing facilities. The sheer height and open spans of each of the three buildings makes them ideal for the production of large scale modular manufacturing. Modular UK has begun production at the facility already and other projects for the group will be scheduled for Driffield over the coming months. The new factory will complement Caledonian’s existing production facilities, a 450,000 square foot factory facility located at Newark, Nottinghamshire.
The growth of Caledonian will be beneficial to the local area as it will secure the jobs at Modular UK, as well as providing up to 100 new full time positions when the factories are fully functioning. Further to this will be a requirement to provide work opportunities for local trades and building product suppliers.
