Knauf Insulation - the UK's leading manufacturer of glass, rock and extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation – has announced the launch of its new on-line free Part L1A calculator designed to help the building and construction industry comply with the Building Regulations as outlined by the Government earlier this year.
This new tool has been specifically designed to simplify the process of working out the compliance of a new dwelling with the updated Part L1A which requires a complex whole building calculation to assess U-values. Knauf Insulations’ new calculator allows designers to quickly assess their design and observe the influence of the major factors on compliance.
Part L1A states the predicted carbon dioxide emissions from the proposed dwelling (DER) must not exceed the target (TER) as derived from the shape and geometry of the proposed building. This can seem confusing, but with a unique understanding of the insulation requirements for each element of the building, Knauf Insulation has developed this tool as the first step towards compliance.
The calculator takes into account the performance specification for each factor that will have an influence over the DER, meaning the user only needs to enter information regarding total floor area, building type, fuel type, efficiency of heating system and type of construction for the walls, roof and floors. The tool is so simple to use, all the information can be inputted in only 15 ‘mouse’ clicks taking an average of just two minutes to arrive at a working draft specification!
Stephen Wise, market development manager at Knauf Insulation, said: “This new tool has been designed with the industry in mind and provides a practical first step towards a complete solution for those working with the new Regulations on a day-to-day basis. Knauf Insulation is the only UK manufacturer of three types of insulation – rock mineral wool, glass mineral wool and extruded polystyrene (XPS) - equipping us with a unique understanding of the insulation requirements of each element of the whole building.
“The industry looks to market leading manufacturers such as ourselves to provide advice and support on how to comply with the regulations. At Knauf Insulation we offer a range of support services including guidance documents on how to comply as well as other free to use software programmes including a SAP 2005 calculation tool, and a U-value calculator"
